Registration and Sojourning of Alien Residents

Registration and Sojourning of Alien Residents

Alien Residents Eligible for Registration

  • A foreigner who intends to stay longer than 90 days from the date of his/her entry into Korea
  • A foreigner who has lost his/her Korean nationality and acquired a foreign nationality, or a foreigner born in Korea, who intends to stay for more than 90 days from date on which he/she is granted for his/her sojourn in Korea.
  • Exemptions regarding the registration of alien residents
    • Diplomats, public officials, envoys visiting Korea to sign an agreement, and the family of such visitors (A-1, A-2, A-3)
    • Entities tasked with critical diplomatic, industrial, or national defense tasks, and the family of such visitors, or other foreigners granted a special exemption for alien resident registration by the Minister of Justice
    • Canadian citizens who intend to stay for less than six months with the intent to engage in activities falling under the following sojourn classifications:
      ※ Culture/Art (D-1), Religion (D-6), Family Visitor (F-1), Dependent Family (F-3), Other (G-1)

Alien Registration Period

  • A foreigner who intends to stay longer than 90 days from the date of his/her entry into Korea → Within 90 days from the date of entry
  • A foreigner who has been approved for his/her sojourn in Korea or modification to his/her Visa → Immediately upon approval
    ※ If a Canadian citizen with a B-2 (Tourist/Transit) Visa intends to apply for a different sojourn classification within six months of arriving in Korea, he/she shall be registered at the time of application for the new sojourn classification.

Alien Registration Applications

Alien Registration Cards can be applied for at local Immigration/Alien Resident authorities (Branch Offices), Immigration/Alien Resident Offices (Branch Offices)
Seoul Immigration/Alien Resident Office (Ministry of Justice), and the Sejong-ro Immigration/Alien Resident Branch Office
Jurisdiction: Eunpyeong-gu, Jongno-gu, Jung-gu, Dongdaemun-gu, Seongbuk-gu, Gangbuk-gu, Dobong-gu, Nowon-gu, Jungnang-gu, Seoul

Required Documents (for all applications)

  • Passport, application form (report form), standard photo (3.5 x 4.5cm)
  • Fees: Registration Card issue fee (KRW 30,000) - Please note that fees for extending your stay, changing your sojourn classification require different fees.

  • Additional documents required for each sojourn classification
    ※ Application via a representative (an entity with the correct authority as a representative): Power of attorney, ID of the authorized representative (copy), ID of the delegating person (copy), certificate of employment of the delegating person

Reissuing Alien Registration Cards

Circumstances that require the reissuing of an Alien Registration Card:

  • If you change the status of your residence
  • If you have lost of misplaced you Alien Registration Card
  • If your Alien Registration Card has deteriorated in condition to a point where the information cannot be recognized
  • If you have no more space to add additionally required information
  • If you change information regarding your Alien Registration (name, gender, date of birth, and nationality)
    ※ You must apply in person within 14 days from the date on which the reissuing of your Alien Registration Card is required.

Required documents when reissuing an Alien Registration Card

  • Passport, reissue application form, statement detailing where and how you lost your Card (if you have lost your Card, you must submit a report to explain why you require a new card), 1 standard photo (3.5 x 4.5cm)
  • Your old Alien Registration Card (if your Card is damaged, or if you have no more space to add additionally required information, or if you need to report a change to your Alien Registration status pursuant to Article 35 Item 5 of the Act)
  • Fee: KRW 30,000

Place of Reissue: Immigration/Alien Residents Office with jurisdiction over your registered residential address

Obligation to report changes in your Alien Registration information

If you are a Registered Alien, and the following occurs, you or your representative must report the change in your Alien Registration information within 14 days of the date on which the change had occurred to the competent Immigration/Alien Residents Office. (Failure to report within the prescribed period will result in a fine pursuant to Article 35 of the Immigration Act)

  • If you have changed your name, gender, date of birth or nationality
  • If the number, issue date, or expiry date of your passport has changed
  • If your affiliated foreign institution or organization has changed (including name changes)
    ※ Required Documents: Application form (application for change of alien registration information), passport and alien registration card, documents verifying the updated information

Duty to report changes at your place of residence

  • You must report your new address to the Immigration/Alien Residents Office with jurisdiction over your new place of residence, or to the Si/Gun/Gu Office or Eup/Myeon/Dong Office within 14 days of relocating.
  • You can report your new residential address at the “Hi Korea” website (www.hikorea.go.kr).
  • If you are a married immigrant, you are required to report your new residence even if your spouse has reported your family’s relocation to the new address (at the Community Center).
  • Failure to report within the prescribed period will result in a fine pursuant to Article 36 of the Immigration Act.
