Hwawon-eup

During the reign of Silla’s King Gyeongdeok, Hwawon-hyeon came to incorporate present-day Okpo, Hwawon, Seongseo, and part of Wolbae, and the Hyeon Office was located in Myeonggok-ri (Hwawon-eup). By the time of the reign of Joseon’s King Sukjong, it was renamed Hwahyeonnae-myeon and made into an administrative unit incorporating present-day Seolhwa-ri, Cheonnae-ri, Myeonggok-ri, and Seongsan-ri. Through the administrative reshuffle in April 1914, Hwahyeonnae-myeon was merged with Inheung-myeon and renamed Hwawon-myeon. With the incorporation of Daegok-ri into Wolbae-myeon in July 1974, Dalseong-gun came to have six ris (subdivided into 36 administrative ris). Hwawon-eup is located at the center of Dalseong-gun, and its total area and population are 27.67km2 and 49,955 people, respectively (as of April 2017). The Eup Office is located in Cheonnae-ri.

The southeastern part of Hwawon-eup is composed of mountainous areas on the northern slope of Biseulsan Mountain. In its northwestern part lies the Haan Plains, including Seolhwadeul Field and Guradeul Field, among others. Nakdonggang River flows along its northwestern border, forming an alluvial plain. In Hwawon Park, Gurari Shrine and ancient tombs of Seongsan-ri can be found. In Bonri-ri, there are Inheungseowon Confucian Academy that houses the tomb of CHU Jeok, the author of Myeongsimbogam (Exemplar of Pure Mind), and a monument honoring him. Hwawon-eup is composed of six ri: Cheonnae-ri, Seongsan-ri, Gura-ri, Seolhwa-ri, Myeonggok-ri, and Bonri-ri.
